Blechschmidt Collection Embryo

Image of Blechschmidt Collection sample embryo (19.6.47) sagittal serial section slides No. 11 to 37. The entire embryo is generally sectioned in one anatomical plane - sagittal, transverse or frontal (coronal) planes.

Each embryo slide box set includes a catalogue slide (lower righthand corner) providing:

  1. date - 19.6.47 (day.month.year)
  2. embryo size - 14 mm (CRL, crown rump length)
  3. description of fixative - Bouin (picric acid, acetic acid and formaldehyde in an aqueous solution)
  4. mountant - Paraffin (wax embedded)
  5. section thickness - 10 μ (μ, micrometre, microns, 1x10-6)
  6. histological stain - decalcified Eosin-Gold orange
  7. number of slides - 51 (sections are in 2 to 3 rows, with the number of sections/slide varying)

The selected sections enclosed by red boxes have been used in specific studies.

Note also the larger size of these historic slides, requiring the use of special slide holders in the digital scanner.

Anatomical Planes

  • sagittal plane - (vertical plane) passes from anterior to posterior, dividing the body into right and left halves. Midsagittal (median) plane is located in the midline, all other planes are parasagittal planes.
  • transverse plane - (cross-section, horizontal plane, axial plane, or transaxial plane) divides the body into superior and inferior parts and is perpendicular to the coronal and sagittal planes.
  • coronal plane - (frontal plane) any vertical plane that divides the body into ventral and dorsal sections.
